Good People who make, for Good People who wear.

GOOD PEOPLE WHO MAKE, FOR GOOD PEOPLE WHO WEAR

Good People makes raffia bags by hand in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Founded in 2017 by French designer Clémence Goudard, the brand works with 60 women artisans.

That sentence is the whole idea, and the name. Every bag passes through the hands of a woman artisan in Antananarivo before it reaches yours.

Our 60 artisans work in the workshop or from home, whichever fits their life. We pay each artisan directly for every bag she makes, with no middleman between the hands that weave and the price you pay.

A bag that grows on trees

Raffia comes from the leaves of the raffia palm, native to Madagascar.

The fiber is harvested once a year without cutting the tree, which simply keeps growing. It is dried, dyed, then woven on a loom or crocheted by hand into the shapes you know: Anja, Le Cabas, Le City, Le Puff.

Depending on the model, one bag takes 2 to 10 days of work, from raw fiber to finished piece. The result is light, strong and keeps its shape. Good news for anyone who has ever carried a "small" bag with far too much in it.

Made by women artisans.

We started in 2017 with six women around one table, in a small workshop in Antananarivo. Today, 60 artisans work with us, in the workshop or from home. Our first inspiration still lives within those women.

What goes into a Good People bag

  • Raffia, harvested and woven in Madagascar.
  • Agave for some handles, and upcycled cotton jersey in some weaves.
  • Stainless steel hardware in gold tone, including the Baobab clasp, our signature.
  • Hands: every step, from extracting the fiber to the last stitch, is done by hand.

The Foundation

In 2015, our founder, Clémence Goudard, was travelling across eastern Africa when she came to work for a charity in Madagascar. After 5 years of studying Fashion Design & Management in Paris and New York, it was here she conceived the idea for Good People. She was inspired by the talent and traditions of the local artisans, their ability to turn natural fibres into everyday objects. She launched the brand in 2017 with just six of these gifted women. Today, 60 women artisans design and craft our bags in Antananarivo.
